Stamped Concrete Des Moines - Patios, Driveways & Pool Decks

Stamped concrete in Des Moines gives you the look of slate, flagstone, brick or wood plank on one poured slab, without the joints that let pavers shift and weeds creep in.

We pour it, color it and stamp it in the same day, then seal it so it can take a central Iowa winter.

Patterns and Colors

Most of our stamped work falls into a few families: ashlar slate (the rectangular cut-stone look), random stone and flagstone, cobble and brick (running bond or herringbone), and wood plank for a deck look around a pool or a hot tub. Color usually comes in two layers. A base color is mixed into the truck or broadcast over the fresh surface, and a release agent in a darker shade is applied before the mats go down. The release collects in the low spots of the texture, which is what gives good stamped work its depth. A border in a contrasting pattern or color, like a smooth band or a soldier course of brick, frames the field and costs less than a second full pattern.

Where Stamped Concrete Works Best

  1. Back patios and fire pit areas. HomeGuide prices a stamped patio with a fire pit at $3,525 to $9,600 before seating.
  2. Front walks and entry landings. A stamped walk ties the front of the house together. HomeGuide lists stamped walkways at $10 to $21 a square foot, against $7 to $17 for a plain walk.
  3. Driveways. HomeGuide's range for a 24' x 24' two-car stamped driveway is $6,900 to $10,400. We usually suggest a stamped border with a broom-finish field on a driveway, because a field that's grippy underfoot is easier to live with in sleet.
  4. Pool decks. Texture helps with wet feet. Ask about a slip-resistant additive in the sealer.

What Moves the Price

HomeGuide breaks stamped concrete into three tiers: basic (one pattern, one color, no border) at $8 to $13 a square foot, mid-range (two or more colors, a border, more than one pattern) at $13 to $19, and high-end (multi-color layers, several patterns, hand-carved detail) at $19 to $26 and up. Its national range for a 20' x 20' stamped patio is $3,200 to $7,600, and that figure leaves out excavation and ground prep. On our quotes, the tear-out, base, thickness, color, pattern and sealer each get their own line.

Stamped Concrete and Iowa Winters

The two things that decide whether a stamped slab still looks good in ten years are the mix and the sealer. We use an air-entrained mix on every exterior stamped job, and we plan the first sealer coat after the slab has cured. HomeGuide recommends resealing every 2 to 3 years. Deicing salt on new decorative concrete is a bad idea, so we'll go over winter care with you before we leave.

Already Have a Plain Slab?

If your patio is sound but plain, a stamped overlay can add the pattern without a new pour. HomeGuide puts stamping existing concrete at $7 to $15 a square foot with a 1/4" to 3/4" overlay. Overlays are covered on our concrete resurfacing page.
