Haul-Off, Not Buried
Broken concrete leaves the property. We don't bury rubble under new grade, where it can cause settling and drainage problems later.
Concrete removal and replacement in Des Moines is for concrete that's past saving: patios, walks, slabs and steps that are broken up, heaved or crumbling.

We break it out, haul it away, fix what's underneath and pour new, or we just remove it if you want grass back.

Patios, sidewalks and back walks, old slabs where a shed or pool used to be, steps and stoops, garage and shop floors, and low concrete walls. HomeGuide's national removal figures give a sense of scale:
HomeGuide says reinforced concrete costs more to break out, and so does a patio attached to the house or built with masonry. Our price also depends on how close equipment can get. A backyard patio behind a fence takes more labor than a slab by the street.
| Project | Typical cost to remove |
|---|---|
| 10' x 10' slab | $300 – $800 |
| 20' x 20' patio | $1,200 – $3,000 |
| 50-foot sidewalk | $750 – $1,250 |
| Steps or stairs | $250 – $500 |
| Two-car garage floor | $1,000 – $3,500 |

If only part of a slab has failed, we'll show you where the good concrete ends and quote just that section. Sometimes that's two panels of a walk or the half of a patio near the house where the downspout drains. Other times the whole thing is gone and partial work would be wasted money. We'll tell you which on the site visit.

The new slab will fail the same way if the cause stays. Before we pour, we deal with whatever broke the old one: soft or wet soil gets dug out and replaced with compacted stone, downspouts get extended away from the slab, tree roots get cut back where it's safe to do so, and grades get changed so water runs off rather than under.

A sunken slab that's still in one piece can often be lifted. See concrete leveling and mudjacking. A sound slab with a flaking surface may only need concrete resurfacing. Driveways have their own page: concrete driveway replacement.
