Concrete Sealing Des Moines - Driveway, Patio & Stamped Concrete Sealer

Concrete sealing in Des Moines protects driveways, patios, walks and stamped concrete from water, oil and road salt, the things that wear Iowa concrete out fastest.

Types of Sealer

  1. Penetrating sealers (silane, siloxane, silicate). These soak into the concrete and repel water without changing the look much. HomeGuide says they resist stains and look natural, and they're our usual pick for plain driveways and walks that get salt.
  2. Acrylic sealers. Film-forming, with a wet look or satin sheen that brings out color. The usual choice for stamped and colored concrete. They wear faster under tires.
  3. Polyurethane. A tougher film that resists abrasion and chemicals. HomeGuide suggests polyurethane or a penetrating sealer for a matte patio.
  4. Epoxy and polyaspartic. Coatings for garage and interior floors. HomeGuide says they cost up to three times more but last the longest.

When to Seal

New concrete needs to cure first. HomeGuide recommends waiting 28 to 30 days after the pour before the first coat, then resealing every 2 to 3 years. For a new slab poured in fall, that often means sealing the following spring. We seal on a dry day with temperatures in the range the product label calls for, which in Des Moines usually means late spring through early fall.

What It Costs

HomeGuide's national figure for cleaning and sealing is $1 to $3 a square foot, with service minimums of $150 to $300.

HomeGuide notes that a two-car driveway can run up to $5,200 with epoxy or polyaspartic.

Prep Makes the Difference

Sealer locks in whatever's on the surface. We clean first, degrease oil spots, and let the slab dry. Sealer doesn't fill cracks, so open cracks and joints get filled before sealing. See concrete crack repair and joint sealing. On stamped concrete with a cloudy or peeling old coat, we strip or recoat as the product requires.
