We pour and replace concrete in Altoona: driveways, back patios, public walks, front steps and pads, from the older blocks near downtown to the newer subdivisions.

Concrete Work We Do in Altoona

Driveway replacements and widenings, new patios and patio extensions, sidewalk squares and front walks, shed and hot tub pads, and garage floors. Where a slab has dropped but is still in one piece, lifting it is usually cheaper than a new pour. If it's heaved or broken, we'll quote concrete driveway replacement instead.

Altoona's Sidewalk Standards

Altoona's city code requires a permit before anyone removes, rebuilds or installs a sidewalk, and it spells out how the walk gets built:

  1. Residential walks at least 5 feet wide and 4 inches thick, in sections no more than 5 feet long
  2. At least 6 inches thick across driveway areas
  3. A 3-inch base of clean, coarse gravel where the soil doesn't drain well
  4. A slope of 1/4 inch per foot toward the curb
  5. A broom or wood-float finish

Right-of-Way Permits and Sheds

Construction in the public right-of-way, such as a new approach or curb work, requires an Engineering right-of-way construction permit through the City's permit portal. The contractor has to carry a $1,000,000 liability certificate naming the City and a $25,000 performance and maintenance bond. If your project is a shed pad, Altoona requires a permit for any shed over 40 square feet, and the shed has to sit in the rear yard, out of easements, 6 feet from the house and 3 feet off the property line. We plan the pad to those setbacks.

Around Altoona

Altoona got its name from the Latin altus, "high," because the surveyor found it was the highest point on the Des Moines Valley Railroad between Des Moines and Keokuk. Today it's home to Adventureland and Prairie Meadows, and we work in neighborhoods all around them, from the blocks near Haines Park to the newer streets on the edges of town.
