Concrete Work We Do in Polk City

Driveway replacements and extensions, back patios and stamped patios, front walks and steps, garage floors, and pads for boats, campers and sheds. Polk City has grown quickly, so many homes sit on newer lots where backfill is still settling. Panels that dropped but are still whole are good candidates for concrete leveling.

Polk City Permits

Polk City's code requires a permit before anyone removes, rebuilds or installs a sidewalk. Its driveway regulations (Chapter 140) require a permit to break out a curb or build a private drive from the street, and once the curb comes out, the driveway and approach have to be paved with at least 6 inches of concrete within 30 days. Inside the right-of-way a driveway must be at least 10 feet wide, with up to 12 feet per garage stall and 36 feet total, and that part, including the sidewalk across it, is 6-inch concrete. A permit is also needed to widen a driveway by more than four feet or to pave over gravel. We file the permit, build the approach to the City's standard, and schedule the inspection.

Lake Country Lots

Polk City sits along Saylorville Lake near Big Creek State Park. Where a lot slopes, the driveway climbs from the street and a patio may need a step or a retaining edge. Water also runs downhill across slabs, so we set slopes and joints to carry runoff around the house, not under the slab.

Around Polk City

Polk City was settled in 1846 and named for President James K. Polk. It was once a contender for county seat before Des Moines got the nod, and it has the only town square in Polk County. Most of the town is in the North Polk school district. We work around the square, in the subdivisions near the lake, and on acreages north of town.
