Concrete Work We Do in Grimes

Driveway extensions and third-stall pads, full driveway replacements, back patios, shed and hot tub pads, sidewalks and steps, and garage floors. Extensions are where Grimes has the most rules, so here's what the City requires.

Grimes Driveway and Approach Rules

The City's driveway requirements sheet separates the driveway (the paved area on your lot) from the approach (the paved area between the street and the sidewalk or property line).

  1. Permit: needed if any work is in the City right-of-way or the approach is getting bigger. Work that stays entirely on private property doesn't need one.
  2. Residential driveway width: 10 feet minimum and 24 feet maximum. The sheet allows an extra 2 feet on one side on the private-property side, up to 26 feet at the sidewalk.
  3. Curb opening: 30 feet maximum.
  4. Flares: 3 to 5 feet on each side of the approach.
  5. Approach build: 6 inches of concrete on compacted rock in the City right-of-way. Sand isn't allowed as base.
  6. Joints: an expansion joint at the street and at the sidewalk.
  7. Inspection: required before the approach is poured.
  8. Fee: $50 for a permit to enlarge a driveway or approach in the right-of-way.
  9. Proportion rule: the driveway and curb opening have to stay in proportion, so you can't widen one without the other.

We draw the extension to those numbers, pull the permit, and book the pre-pour inspection. See also our driveway extensions and approaches page.
