Pleasant Hill draws a clear line between private concrete and concrete at the street, and that line decides whether you need a permit.

Concrete Work We Do in Pleasant Hill

Back patios and patio extensions, driveway widenings and parking pads, approach replacements, public and front walks, garage floors, and shed and spa pads. Where an older slab has sunk but is still in one piece, we'll quote lifting before replacement.

When Pleasant Hill Requires a Permit

The City's permit page lays it out:

  1. No building permit: concrete work outside the public right-of-way, approach and sidewalk areas, such as patios, slabs and driveway extensions. The work still has to meet code.
  2. Driveway approach permit: removing any part of a curb, or building, replacing or removing a driveway approach. The part of the driveway that isn't in the right-of-way or sidewalk area doesn't need it.
  3. Sidewalk permit: building, repairing, rebuilding or removing sidewalk on public property.
  4. Street excavation / right-of-way permit: digging in or blocking the right-of-way, with insurance and a penal bond, plus an approved closure notice for any lane or street closure.
  5. Sheds: a permit for one-story sheds over 40 square feet, and frost footings for structures of 1,020 square feet and up.

That means a backyard patio can usually be scheduled right away, while an approach or public-walk job waits on the City. For approach details see driveway approaches and curb cuts.

Around Pleasant Hill

Pleasant Hill incorporated in 1956 and got its own ZIP code, 50327, in 2005. Most of the city is in the Des Moines school district, and the newer parts are in Southeast Polk, which has Four Mile Elementary and its junior and senior high schools here. We work in the older neighborhoods and in the newer developments alike.
